Emissions Testing

The 1990 federal Clean Air Act required the states to set up vehicle emission inspection programs. Utah's staggered inspections system has different requirements depending on which county you live in. Vehicles in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber counties with model years less than six years old are mandated to have tests every two years. The requirements call for vehicles with even model years to be tested in even-numbered years, and those with odd model years to be tested in odd-numbered years. Vehicles more than six years old must be tested yearly, although any from 1967 or older are exempt. Cache County requires tests for vehicles six years old and higher, using the same even/odd model year staggering. However, vehicles from 1968 or older are exempt.
